Learning About Postharvest Loss Management Through Hermetic Storage Bags at the University of Rwanda

Recently, we had an insightful discussion at the University of Rwanda about postharvest loss management and the importance of using hermetic bags for grain storage. The session focused on innovative approaches to reducing postharvest food losses and improving the quality and value of agricultural products. The discussion was attended by a team that included Senior Lecturer Dr. Manirere Jean D’Amour, and Lecturer Dr.Mulinga Narcisse, and Mr. Thomas Irakomeza, a Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist at IFAD, and Dukuzumuremyi Eric, Chief Executive Officer of Deacomart Ltd. Their participation highlighted the importance of collaboration among academic researchers, development partners, and agribusiness leaders in promoting sustainable agricultural solutions. During the session, we explored how hermetic storage bags help protect grains from pests, moisture, and quality deterioration without relying heavily on chemical treatments. This technology provides an opportunity for smallholder farmers to reduce postharvest losses, increase income, and contribute to food security. The engagement at the University of Rwanda was a valuable learning experience that strengthened our understanding of postharvest management and demonstrated the importance of connecting research, innovation, and practical solutions to address challenges in the agricultural sector.
